Seeing the snow capped peaks of the Siberian Mountains and frozen Lake Baikal I was surprised at the warmish 2 days I spent at Listvyanka. The lake is famous for the sturgeon and production of caviar, the problem is that they were all fished out 20 years ago and the fish are now produced in fish farms. Listvyanka is a small holiday village full of traditional log homes and new housing repeats the material use but is more “up-market” and costly. The morning I was due to leave I looked out of my window and found 2 feet of snow on the ground, roads blocked, electricity cut off and I was due to leave Irkutsk ay 3pm. Thanks go to “Ivan the incredible” for the rescue effort and lift into Irkutsk !
