It’s easy to get a good impression of how the majority of Russian people live from this trip. The rail was a very early innovation which allowed the population of a vast country. The standard of living is still poor for 40% of the Russian people, may of whom live in small villages and towns dotted across the width of the country. The standard of amenities of this “developing” country is poor compared to western society. There is great wealth here, as well as abject poverty, but I guess the poverty has been “socialised”. It’s also easy to see why Siberia was chosen as a place to send dissidents!
